Guided walking excursion to Vallombrosa and the Giants of Italy

If you are tired of the summer heat or simply want to breathe some fresh air, Vallombrosa is the place for you. This very green corner of Tuscany has always been synonymous with peace and uncontaminated nature, with its forest park of approximately 1270 hectares at altitudes ranging from 450 to 1450 meters above sea level.

In the midst of these expanses of woods, set among them like a precious stone, stands the Abbey of Vallombrosa, with its thousand years of history. The Vallombrosan monks – Benedictines by choice, de facto forest guards - have been able to maintain and safeguard an immense forestry heritage over the centuries, drawing economic but above all spiritual benefits from it. Vallombrosa tells a story of authentic vocation, community and ecology, an immersion in tranquility and beauty.

Many paths start from here and the itinerary that Federigo and Francesca propose leads into a forest full of Douglas firs, plants native of America and introduced to Vallombrosa in the second half of the 19th century for silvicultural purposes.

The particular microclimate of the area meant that these trees grew at a very fast pace, leading the forest to have truly majestic specimens in less than two centuries. Two in particular stand out above them, one even over 60 metres: they are the tallest trees in the entire Italian peninsula and for this reason they have been nicknamed the Giants of Italy.
